Cor Ardens Catholic Scripture Studies

“Did not our hearts burn (cor ardens) within us while ... He opened the scripture to us?” Luke 24:32

From its beginning, the Catholic Church has taught the faithful to love and cherish Sacred Scripture.  Our earliest descriptions of the Mass reveal that Christ was presented to the baptized at the Table of the Word, through Scripture readings, and at the Table of the Eucharist, in the Bread and Wine.  Early Church history is full of men and women who were devoted to the reading and study of God’s Word.  St. Jerome famously declared that “ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

Through the Church’s long history, some generations have grasped the importance of Scripture better than others.  In our own era, the Fathers of Vatican II recognized an erosion of biblical literacy among the laity and clergy.  In Dei Verbum, they reminded us of the Living Presence of God in His word.  They also issued a call to the whole Church to “gladly put themselves in touch with the sacred text itself” (DV 25).   They expected this return to Scripture would be a source of great renewal. From this it should be clear that the time for Catholics to recover our rich heritage of devotion to Scripture has arrived.
